AI voice cloning fraud
AI cloning of a voice takes minutes and needs only a short audio sample. The result can fool colleagues, family members and finance staff. Here is how voice cloning fraud works, what to look for and what to do instead of trusting your ears.
How an AI voice clone scam works
- Collect audio. The attacker gathers a sample from a video, webinar, social post or a recorded phone greeting.
- Clone the voice. Off-the-shelf AI tools generate speech in that voice, sometimes live during the call.
- Create pressure. The caller claims to be an executive, a vendor or a relative in trouble, and asks for a wire, gift cards, a code or a password reset, with urgency and secrecy.
- Cash out fast. Funds move through intermediary accounts or crypto, which makes recovery hard.
Warning signs
A clone can be flawless, so the content of the request matters more than the sound of the voice:
- An unusual payment, new bank details or gift cards requested by phone.
- Urgency, secrecy, or a reason you cannot call back or use the normal approval process.
- A call from an unfamiliar number or a messaging app the person doesn’t normally use.
- Small audio oddities (odd pacing, flat emotion, clipped words) — helpful when present, never reliable on their own.
What actually stops it
- Hang up and confirm through a known channel. Call back on a number from your directory, or send a confirmation request to the person’s enrolled device.
- Agree a policy that money and account changes are never authorised on a call alone, whoever is calling.
- Use a family or team code word for emergencies, and treat any request that avoids it as suspicious.
- Limit unnecessary audio exposure where practical, though you cannot remove it entirely.
Where Wardeye fits
Wardeye turns the “confirm through a known channel” rule into one tap: the approver sends an “Is this you?” with the reason, the real executive approves or denies with Face ID on their phone, and the outcome is logged. A cloned voice on a call cannot answer a push sent to the real person’s device. Shield adds on-device synthetic-voice detection as an extra warning (beta).
Frequently asked questions
How much audio does it take to clone a voice?
It varies by tool, but a short clip is often enough to produce a convincing result. Anyone who has spoken in a public video or recording should assume a clone is possible.
Can I tell a cloned voice by listening?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Do not rely on how the voice sounds. Rely on whether the request can be confirmed through a separate channel.
What if the caller says they can’t be reached any other way?
That is a red flag. Genuine executives and vendors can be confirmed through an enrolled phone or a directory number; an insistence that you skip verification is a common sign of fraud.
Is voice cloning illegal?
Laws vary by country and use. Using a cloned voice to defraud someone is fraud in essentially every jurisdiction. This page is general information, not legal advice.
